Uche Sparks Dominant Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden European campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually guarantees them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another victory in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to seal direct passage to the knockout stages, particularly after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This occasion offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne team that had concluded their league season were outmatched even for a mostly second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Control Asserted from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, fizzing a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the official waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a glaring chance, indicating there is still scope for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
