The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's determination was the chance of the former president's move to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the trial a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
