The English along with Wales Pitted Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts will face off in the same group for the 2027 RWC, promising a major pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw mirrors their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the English team's surprise early exit.

Other Notable Pool Draws

Ireland and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group once again, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland secured a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in France, complete that same group.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and world number one South Africa before the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the groups play out according to the current global standings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both the English and the Irish until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with Japan, future hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
