Iran States It May Resume American Nuclear Discussions if Approached with 'Respect' and 'Honor'
Iran is willing to reinitiate nuclear negotiations with Washington as long as it is approached with "dignity" and "respect", Iran's top diplomat has announced.
Abbas Araghchi said solely negotiations produced results, and disclosed new appeals had originated from intermediaries to reopen talks with the Trump administration. He said Iran did not have undeclared nuclear sites, and Tehran was not yet able to allow the global atomic watchdog to inspect bombed nuclear sites for safety concerns.
Navigating a Difficult Path
Araghchi is navigating a difficult route since Iran wishes not to appear to be acting from a situation of weakness, and he emphatically stated that Iran had come out stronger defensively and emotionally from the coordinated strike on its enrichment centers in June.
He was speaking at a security conference in Tehran where he restated that Iran had "an absolute privilege to enrich uranium within its borders that it will always maintain" β the primary cause of the impasse in the previous talks.
Earlier Negotiations Unexpectedly Concluded
The prior phases of talks between the United States and Iran were concluded unexpectedly and acrimonious conclusion on 12 June when Israel, with US support, attacked Iran's enrichment centers in a two-week conflict that concluded with the US president asserting the sites had been destroyed. Afterward, European countries used their privilege to reimpose UN-wide sanctions, but Iran asserts they have not had a substantial consequence.
Magic Solution Suggested
Iranian officials said they felt they had achieved a "magic solution" to the nuclear fuel concern in earlier negotiations, when it was settled an local partnership with US participation could process nuclear material. The two nations would have been able to claim victory since domestic enrichment would have persisted and the US could be certain that Iran's atomic project was exclusively peaceful.
It had not been agreed in the negotiations that American atomic experts could work on Iranian soil, but that was a logical implication of the cooperative offer. Diplomats stated on multiple occasions they had achieved a deal with Trump's special envoy the US official only for the agreement to fall apart due to "detractors in America".
Present Status
Iranian officials declared the cooperative arrangement was now withdrawn, but it seems very probable the offer could be reintroduced in some form if talks restart.
Trump in recent days said he had been getting signals that Iran wanted to restart talks, but in private Tehran representatives say they are not yet obtaining clear proposals from Washington either explicitly or from key regional mediators, such as the Qatari government, Egypt, Oman and Saudi Arabia. The Tehran's diplomatic corps has been criticized of inactivity in the wake of the US president's straightforward manner, but Tehran states negotiations is not part of a spectacle.
Negotiating Position
In his speech to the conference, intended to portray the US as a controlling nation that misuses the idea of global regulations, the foreign minister declared the two-week conflict showed the clash could not be resolved by military means. He stated the strikes commenced with a Washington's ultimatum for an total Iran submission and concluded with an unconditional call for a truce.
Iran is convinced the initial Israeli attacks were carried out with complete American awareness and collaboration, making trust challenging to reestablish.
Diplomacy Remains the Ultimate Resolution
Araghchi stated: "It was not Iran that had deserted dialogue; it was America and the Western nations that had always attempted to dictate their demands during the talks. Dialogue can still be active and continues the final solution to address disagreements, but its standards, regulations and tenets must be respected."
"If they speak to the Iranian people with the tone of respect and honor, they will obtain a reply in the identical tone."
Recovery and Rebuilding
In what is characterized by Iranian officials as the conflict of recovery and reconstruction, Araghchi said he was confident Iran's defence capabilities "have significantly improved than prior to 13 or 14 June of this year. Every aspect of our defense have been rebuilt. We gained multiple understandings from this war; we have identified our personal limitations and the shortcomings of the opponent."
He stated: "We successfully passed this conflict. Our enrichment knowledge, which they aimed to destroy, continues to exist. The sites and gear, if eliminated, will be reconstructed; what is essential is the determination of the nation of Iran and then the national cohesion that they aimed at, but did not succeed to break. The nation of Iran have grown stronger, more cohesive, and more supportive of the administration and the state in the aftermath of this invasion."
