Government Official States Ministry of Defence Looking at Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, as Staff Advised to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defence official has stated that the MoD is actively investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been advised to avoid talking about classified information in any vehicles.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

In a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese cars.

He said that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but emphasised that safety is a concern in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any car, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

The revelation follows reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and cause disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

The broader security environment underscores the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of official operations, from transport use to discussions habits.
